Gardens and Kind Children
With nightly news that tells only the doom and gloom of the northside, it’s nice to capture some of the small stories that warm the heart and remind of the beautiful community that resides on the northside. Jim Lovestar, community gardener in the Upper Willard Homewood neighborhood shared this story.
Early in May as he was settling in for the evening the doorbell rang. Lovestar thought to himself, “who is bothering me and who would be coming to my door? If it’s somebody selling something, I’ll get rid of him real quick.”
It turned out to be a couple of children who live down the street from him. The little girl kindly asked, “Could we have one of your flowers. It’s for our mom. Today’s her birthday. We wanted to ask you instead of just picking without permission.”
Lovestar was struck not just by the kindness of the children in asking, but their appreciation for their mother. “We have some great parents in this neighborhood,” said Lovestar, “I mean great parents.”
After picking a red and yellow flame colored tulip, the girl showed Lovestar the eight-page birthday card, complete with greetings from school friends, that she had made for her mother.
