New Chimney Swift Tower at JD Rivers Garden
If you pass by the JD Rivers’ Children’s Garden on Glenwood you’ve probably noticed the amazing garden beds, but recently you might also have noticed a wooden tower being erected.
The tower is a pseudo-chimney which provides a nesting area for a native bird, Chimney Swifts, whose habitat has been in decline as more and more resident cap or block-off their chimneys. Chimney Swifts eat 10,000 insects a day, making them a valuable asset to the neighborhood and the garden.
The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association (BMNA) agreed to having the chimney built with a grant of $700 from the Audubon Society of Minnesota. The bottom half of the chimney will also have an information kiosk with educational materials about the Chimney Swift.
